Born Elizabeth Rosemond Taylor on February 27, 1932 in Hampstead Garden Suburb, London, Taylor became the highest paid actress in history when she agreed a fee of $1,000.000 to star as Cleopatra.

In 1978, Elizabeth Taylor announced that she was putting the Taylor-Burton diamond up for sale and was planning to use part of the proceeds to build a hospital in Botswana. In June of 1979 Henry Lambert, the New York jeweler, stated that he had bought the Taylor-Burton Diamond for $5,000,000.

In 1969 Richard Burton acquired for his bride the 69.42-carat, pear-shaped Burton-Taylor diamond. It was cut from a rough stone weighing 240.80 carats found in the Premier Mine in 1966 and subsequently bought by Harry Winston. This flawless, D-colored diamond was subsequently mounted as a pendent on a platinum necklace by Harry Winston.
